Competence in you workplace or any other activity that you engage in is crucial for success, and you need to be determined to develop your skills to a level of competency. So how do you develop and maintain self-determination such that you continue to level-up your skills and increase your competence?
Courses are good if you are looking to build self-determination, particularly structured courses that are not self-timed. If someone else imposes the timeframes and requirements on you, then you do not need to develop your own willpower, but instead sticking to the requirements becomes a habit.
Involving yourself in any sort of sport or exercise program can help you with developing skills and growing into self-determination. One may even feel a sense of motivation in some way. This could be a good thing, since that is what self-determination is all about. The more motivated you are generally, the more you can accomplish, the more competent you will become, and the more determined you will become to be successful. It is an increasing upward spiral.
Most of the time it is up to the individual to eliminate any problems they feel they may have, and to search for the skills they need. Most workplaces now do not offer formal training programs, so you must seek out the training that fills in the gaps you feel you have in your competencies.
One way of looking at things is to reflect back on what you have accomplished until that time, and think if you had any concerns and ask yourself was there any motive behind these feelings. Most of the time you may feel stressed out about something. If you can write down in a journal or keep tabs on what you feel at the time and why you feel this way, you can progress to self-determination. You will find patterns of what motivates you, or even what you are doing before and after work that affect you during the day.
You have to be responsive to your emotions and also come to be able to understand what causes your emotions and what the after effects are. One can always develop a knack of knowing want to change. It is up to you.
If you are struggling ask a trusted friend to lend you a hand. They may be able to point out some triggers or causes that you don’t clearly see, and could also give you feedback on the after effects of certain emotional states that you are in.
Most importantly, we need to make sure that you can conjure up a peak state when you need it, and what you need to do to get there, and what might prevent this. Once in a peak state, you will be highly motivated and determined to achieve your goals, whether that is improving your skills and competence in a particular area, or pursuing some other goal.
